In recent years, cosmetic products have become indispensable in our lives. The number of products we use for beauty and personal care, as well as the share of cosmetic products in our personal expenses, is increasing every day.
While the cosmetic industry is experiencing its golden age in terms of product variety, certain ingredients found in some products, which pose health risks, frequently dominate the industry’s agenda.
Many cosmetic products filling the shelves today contain at least a few of the harmful additives mentioned. Many countries, after realizing this subtle danger, have had to seek new solutions. While developed countries are increasingly turning to natural ingredients that pose no health risks in almost every field, the cosmetic industry has also started producing cosmetic products using entirely natural additives.
Research has revealed that these additives, which cause allergic reactions and irritation on the skin, can lead to extremely risky and fatal conditions, such as cancer, in cases of long-term exposure.
Sodium Laureth/ Lauryl Sulfate (SLES/SLS)
Two of the surfactants frequently used in cosmetic materials are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These ingredients are not derived from natural sources such as palm or coconut oil. They are formed from sulfur trioxide and chlorosulfuric acid. Although the use of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), which cause infections and rashes on the skin, is prohibited in many products, they are found in all commercial shampoos and the majority of other health and beauty products, especially skin creams and toothpastes. .
How Does It Effect?
The active ingredients contained in cosmetics distribute and accumulate throughout the body, especially in the skin, respiratory tract and digestion. If the rate at which these ingredients are eliminated from the body is slower than the rate at which they are taken into the body, they will be extremely toxic to the body.
SLS/SLES, which is contained in many cosmetic products and passes into the tissues through the bloodstream when applied to the body, spreads to the heart, liver, lungs, brain and eyes. SLS/SLES, which remains in the tissues of our body for a long time, causes cancer, endocrine (hormone) disruption, eye damage, hair loss, extreme skin sensitivity and dry skin.
What to do?
The basic safety step for cosmetic users is the warning label on the product. When buying a cosmetic product, it is important for your health to read the product label carefully and not consume products with harmful ingredients. In addition, consulting a dermatologist or beautician before using the product, not using expired or stale products, using products produced in accordance with EU standards, and choosing products that have undergone clinical, dermatological and toxicological tests will protect you against the damage that cosmetic products may cause.
